What Is Formation Bible Study AI?
The Formation Bible Study AI Study Assistant is an artificial intelligence feature built into the app to help you explore the Bible more deeply. It is powered by the Claude API, developed by Anthropic, PBC. Formation Bible Study is a separate company — Berean Defense LLC — and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by Anthropic.
When you ask the AI Study Assistant a question, your message is sent to Anthropic's API, processed by a large language model (Claude), and a response is returned to you within the app. Formation Bible Study does not build or host its own AI model.
AI-Generated Content Label
All responses from the AI Study Assistant are clearly marked within the app with an AI indicator. They are generated by a language model — not written by human scholars, pastors, or theologians.
What AI Can Help With
The Formation Bible Study AI Study Assistant is designed to accelerate your Bible study — not replace it. It works best as a study companion that provides context, surfaces connections, and helps you ask better questions of the text.
Historical & Cultural Context
Background on the historical setting, geography, customs, and culture surrounding a passage — helping you understand what the original audience would have heard and seen.
Word & Language Exploration
Plain-language explanations of Greek and Hebrew words, how they're used in other passages, and what nuances might be lost in translation.
Cross-Reference & Thematic Connections
Surfacing other passages that connect thematically or doctrinally, helping you see how Scripture speaks to itself across books and testaments.
Inductive Study Guidance
Prompts and questions to help you Observe, Interpret, and Apply a passage using Formation Bible Study's structured study method — keeping you in the driver's seat.
Passage Summaries & Outlines
Quick summaries, structural outlines, and narrative overviews of books or chapters to orient your study before going deep.
What AI Cannot Do
Important Limitation
AI language models can and do make mistakes — including confident-sounding errors about Scripture, theology, history, and doctrine. Formation Bible Study AI is not infallible. Always test AI responses against the Bible itself (Acts 17:11). When doctrine matters, consult your pastor, elder, or trusted theological sources.
The AI Study Assistant is a tool, not an authority. There are specific things it is not designed or equipped to do — and that we actively restrict it from doing in the Formation Bible Study context.
Replace Scripture
The Bible is the primary source of Christian truth. AI responses are based on patterns in training data — they are not revelation. Always go back to the actual text.
Replace Your Pastor or Church
Theological guidance, pastoral care, and spiritual accountability require human relationship. Formation Bible Study AI is not a substitute for your local church community or spiritual leadership.
Guarantee Theological Accuracy
AI can produce plausible-sounding explanations that are doctrinally incorrect. Berean Defense LLC does not warrant the theological accuracy of any AI-generated response. Verify all significant claims with primary sources.
Provide Counseling or Mental Health Support
Formation Bible Study AI is not a mental health tool. If you are in crisis, please contact a qualified counselor, therapist, or crisis resource. AI cannot replace human care in times of personal distress.
Access Real-Time or Current Events
The Claude model used by Formation Bible Study has a knowledge cutoff date and does not have access to current news, events, or updated biblical scholarship published after its training.
Data Handling & Privacy
When you use the AI Study Assistant, certain information is necessarily transmitted to Anthropic's servers to generate a response. Here is exactly what is and is not shared.
| What Is Sent | Why |
|---|---|
| Your AI query (question or prompt) | Required to generate a relevant response |
| The Bible passage in focus (if applicable) | Provides context so the AI can respond about the correct text |
| Minimal conversation history (within session) | Allows the AI to understand follow-up questions in context |
| What Is NOT Sent | Note |
|---|---|
| Your name or email address | API calls are not tied to your identity |
| Your personal notes or prayer journal | Your private study content stays on our servers, not sent to AI |
| Payment or billing information | Billing is handled separately by Stripe |
| Browsing or reading history | Reading activity is tracked by Formation Bible Study, not shared with Anthropic |
Anthropic's Data Practices
Anthropic processes your queries under their own privacy policy and terms of service. Formation Bible Study uses the Claude API under a commercial agreement that restricts Anthropic from using your queries to train their models. For full details on how Anthropic handles API data, see anthropic.com/legal/privacy.

Our AI Principles
As Christians building a tool for Christians, we take seriously how AI is used in spiritual formation. These are the commitments that guide how we build and deploy AI features in Formation Bible Study.
Scripture First
Every AI feature is designed to point users back to the text of Scripture, not to become a substitute for it. We build AI as an on-ramp to deeper Bible engagement, not a bypass around it.
Always Disclosed
We will always clearly label AI-generated content within the app. We will never present AI responses as if they came from human scholars, Formation Bible Study staff, or biblical authorities.
User in Control
The AI Study Assistant is opt-in. You choose when to engage it. Formation Bible Study's core Bible reading, highlighting, notes, and reading plans work entirely without AI involvement.
Responsible Improvement
We monitor AI outputs for quality and theological integrity. When we identify patterns of error or misuse, we update our prompting system and notify affected users where appropriate.
Restricted Use Cases
Formation Bible Study's AI is configured for Bible study purposes only. It is instructed not to generate content outside that scope. Users who attempt to misuse the AI for unrelated purposes may lose AI access.
Third-Party AI Provider
Formation Bible Study's AI Study Assistant is powered by Anthropic's Claude API. Anthropic is an AI safety company headquartered in San Francisco, California. By using the Formation Bible Study AI features, you also agree to be bound by Anthropic's usage policies to the extent they apply to end users of API-based products.
